National Check the Chip Day – Why It Matters More Than You Think

August 15 is National Check the Chip Day, and while it might not be a widely celebrated holiday, it’s one that could save your pet’s life.

At the Animal Resource Center, we see firsthand how powerful a microchip can be. It’s a tiny device, about the size of a grain of rice, implanted just beneath your pet’s skin. That tiny chip could be the key to reuniting lost pets with the families who love them.

Microchips Work… When They’re Up to Date

A microchip is only as good as the information attached to it. A recent move, new phone number or change in ownership can make a chip virtually useless if the contact info isn’t up to date.

That’s where National Check the Chip Day comes in. It’s your yearly reminder to make sure your pet’s microchip is:

  • Registered with a national database
  • Up to date with your correct contact information
  • Properly scanned by your vet at your next visit to confirm it is still working and is easily detected

If you adopted your pet from a shelter or rescue, their microchip may already be registered, but double-checking never hurts.

Here’s how to check your pet’s chip:
  1. Call your vet or visit a shelter to have your pet scanned.
  2. Look up the chip number on www.petmicrochiplookup.org to find the manufacturer and check/update your info.
  3. Contact the manufacturer to update your details. Many microchip companies allow you to do this online in just a few minutes.
No Chip Yet? Let’s Fix That.

If your pet isn’t microchipped, now is the perfect time to fix that. At the Animal Resource Center, we offer microchipping for just $10. Even better? We’ll register the chip for you at no additional cost.

The process is quick, safe and virtually painless. Microchips are a permanent form of identification that can’t fall off or fade over time, making them a smart investment in your pet’s future.

Real Stories. Real Reunions.

We’ve seen dogs come home months, even years later, all because of a microchip. We’ve watched tears turn to smiles when a scan reveals a match. Your pet is family. This tiny piece of tech can bring them back to you if the unthinkable happens.

So this August 15, take five minutes to Check the Chip. If your pet isn’t chipped yet, let us help. Stop by during business hours and give your pet the best chance at a safe return home.
